Hourglass

The hourglass describes a body shape where a woman’s shoulders are the same size as the hips, but the waist is notably smaller. To accentuate the features of the body shape you should look for a body-hugging dress with either a sweetheart or v-neckline and add a skinny waist belt to draw the eye to the incredible waist. A structured silhouette such as a mermaid style dress, or a dress with a fitted top that flares out at the bottom, flatters this body shape the best.

Pear

The pear body type typically has a lower-body that is larger than the upper- body. In order to define the hips in a flattering way try dresses in the A-line style with a transparent neckline. Maxi-wrap dresses are also extremely flattering for a pear-shaped figure. Avoid dresses that are too tight as this emphasises the hips.

The right neckline of a dress will draw emphasis to the torso and bust and away from the hips. Wide necklines such as boat-necks and scoop necks are the most complimentary for a pear-shape figure.

Dresses that hit the knee or the ankle as it draws the eye to the bottom of the dress rather than to the widest part of the body.

Apple

A woman with an apple-shaped body will have a rounded waistline and torso but will have slender arms and legs. The hips, waist and bust will all be relatively proportioned.

For this body type, A-line dresses work extremely well as they define the waist nicely.

Dresses that have draping around the torso are also flattering as it creates a slimming effect. Short dresses, that incorporate a ruffled bottom draws the eye's attention to the elongated legs and away from the rounded mid-section of the body.

This body type should avoid body hugging dresses such as the mermaid style.

Inverted Triangle

This body type is the exact opposite of the pear shape. The bust and shoulders on this body type is larger than the lower body. Dresses that work well for the body shape are dresses that draw emphasis to the lower half of the body. Dresses that have details on the waistline or have a flared bottom are best.

This body type should avoid halter neck and off the shoulder dresses as they draw attention to the top half of the body and creates the illusion of broader shoulders.

Rectangle

The rectangular body shape has the top and bottom part of the body in proportion. The weight is evenly distributed through the body.

Dresses that best suit this style are ones that create the illusion of a defined waistline. This can be done with a belt or a dress that has embellishments on the waist. Strong blocks of colour are also great for defining the body. Halter neck tops also give the impression of a bigger waist, giving the body more definition. The rectangular body shape can pull off a 3/4 sleeved dress.
